We have been working through a summer-long study on “the heart” called “Matters of the Heart” .
No, we aren’t talking about the organ in your chest, but we do believe the “heart” we speak of is of vital importance to our lives. The heart is source of our affections. It is the word that sums up our inner self and what, at our core, we love the most. Because where we give our affections is where we will give our time, money and other resources.
Think about it…
If you love a girl or guy, you’re going to spend time with them. You’re probably also going to buy them things and spend time on him or her. You may end up even giving them things that you shouldn’t.
If you love sports, you just may play one….or like 10. And you probably spend money on equipment, lessons or traveling. And all of those practices and games take a lot of time.
God knows this about you. In Proverbs 4:23 the Bible says “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from”.
Everything you do, flows from what you love.
God created you that way. But He made you in such a way, that He was supposed to be your first love. All other affections were meant to flow from that place. God at the top, means that you will thrive in your other affections. You’ll be selfless in relationships. You’ll be content in who God says you are rather than how well you did or who likes you.
It frees you up.
So this stuff is important and where we give our hearts matters to God cause He wants them.
So throughout the summer we’ll be hitting on various ways we can engage our hearts with God and truly be able to live the lives we’ve been called to and love people the way Jesus loves us.
